Seems wild that a now beloved phrase, started as a government slogan to get people to stop throwing trash on the road.
Started as and still is.
I legit had no idea! I’ve heard it a lot in media as just like a joke about how tough texans think they are.
Same with “everything is bigger in Texas” I think that was a reference to the increased fines.
I remember when it started. I even remember Shamu singing about it.

Lady Bird Johnson (first lady, wife of Lyndon Johnson) was the first to push for anti littering and anti billboards. She was also moved by the amount of trash she saw in Texas.

Looks like the trash was still a problem into the 80s when the Texas DOT started their own anti littering campaign.
